Radiative contribution to thermal grating decay

The decay of a spatially sinusoidal temperature perturbation (thermal grating) via thermal transport by both conduction and radiation is analyzed theoretically. intrinsic non-radiative described the heat diffusion equation while radiative for non-scattering absorbing medium. We solve coupled equations analytically obtain grating rate, which leads to an explicit expression contribution effective conductivity measured with laser-induced transient technique. find that at given period, maximized when absorption length about 1/4 period. present upper bound discuss results representative materials. conclude in typical measurement period micrometer range, negligible, but it may be significant if millimeter or centimeter range. Our analysis also provides Fourier-domain Green's function can used field produced arbitrary spatiotemporal distribution sources.
